Love on sale: Should Prostitution be legalized???

If you are one of those misogynistic bastards, who goes around having fun with women and looks at them as objects of pleasure, then this post is for you. And if you’re a man who buys sex and thinks you’re engaged in a "mutually beneficial" transaction that’s causing no harm, then I’m definitely talking to you.

Prostitution is world’s oldest ongoing & the most profit making “profession”. Be it in the 19th or the 21st century, this industry has flourished with every passing day.

Along with a host of dilemmas that the society is facing today, one of the most important and dicey ethical dilemma is, “Should prostitution be legalized?”

With over 4 million women & girls being pushed or lured into this hideous trap every year, there is no reason for us to ignore this part of our society.

The proponents of legalizing prostitution believe that by doing so, it will not only help in increasing the tax revenue but also drag people out of poverty and improve public health care. According to this school of thought, prostitution is a victimless crime and by making it legal, sex crime will also come under control.

But looking at the reality, the opponents advocate the contrary. According to the facts and reasons presented by them, legalizing prostitution will only encourage crimes against women. It will not only motivate pimps and flesh traders, but also leave no hope for these women/girls to come out of this vicious cycle.

I personally too believe in the same. Although a lot of countries have legalized prostitution, we cannot ignore the fact that it has in no way increased their respectability or acceptability in the society. If not legalize, it is high time to regulate this sector and strengthen women’s safety in red light areas.

In countries like India, the presence or absence of laws, rules & regulations with respect to prostitution doesn’t make any difference!!! Their existence has not brought about any major change in the statistics of girls being purchased or sold and nor in the rate of sexually transmitted diseases.

And if anyone of you is planning to defend India in this case, then let me remind you that Asia’s Biggest and Oldest red light area is in Maharashtra, India. “Kamathipura” to be specific.

Just think about it!!!

If you think that I am being preachy… or that I am over-reacting, then ask yourself this question:

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO TAKE THIS UP AS A PROFESSION WHEN SHE GROWS UP???

If not, then why are people after legalizing prostitution??!!? When the whole concept of sex-trade is immoral and exploitive in nature, making it legal is out of question!

Instead of dragging people out poverty, it will only push them into it and take up prostitution as an easy option. It will work more in oppressing women than in empowering them!

Listen to any of such women’s interviews, and you will realize that it was not something they took up willingly. More than 90% of them are forced into prostitution.

Instead of ignoring them, it is our responsibility to help them come out of this awful trade.

What is your take on this? Tell me.

  1. This sector should be banned. As it becomes easy for people to get sex .The ones who suffer in this give and take are women. It has ben seen that handicapped women take this as a job to fulfil their needs as they dont want to be dependent or are at times humiliated for being handicapped.

Thus ending up this sector will not only reduce sexually transmitted diseases but also reduce crimes against women and the buying and selling of the girls too

    1. It is already a "Banned" thing shruti !!! And that's the reason it is illegal today.
There are already a zillion laws in our country, but it's poor implementation is the root cause of the existence of red light areas.

  2. as long as there are people who are not contented with what they are getting from their partners as long as their are people who are willing to use their service we really can't do anything. Sure we really would like to help but somehow some prostitutes do it by choice and by the notion of getting fast bucks...
One reason why they are being legalize is so the government can get something out of it, you said it yourself it's profitable industry... means a good tax means a good source of income for the government...yes that is so sick but that is the reality. as long as humans feel lust there is no way we can really stop this trade. I am not into this kind of thing I hate it too but somehow not knowing what help i can give is something... i'm just being realistic.
I just hope prostitution would be a job for those who like it and not to those who are forced into it. I feel for the children but sometimes the parents are the one who send them to these kinds of things. there are things that we can't really dip our fingers into..

    1. Absolutely true Fina!!!
There is nothing more mean in this world than legalizing prostitution.
The never ending lust and obsession has not even spared children, as small as 3-4 years !!!

  3. i studied at DAV Nerul (outskirts of Mumbai)... i could not even afford a decent education.
But what I would like to understand is why would the 'policy makers' want to change the primary law pertaining to the legal status of a 'sex-worker' dated 1956 called The Immoral (Suppression) Act[SITA] which was amended in 1986 [PITA].
What got me thinking is 'What can we do about it?'
sirsh sinha whats ur take on Corruption?

    1. Hello anonymous,
Thank you for sharing your views. :)

The scenario back then (in 1980s) was different. Lawmakers made certain acts according to the situation that existed that time. But times have changed. And so is the severity of crime. The culprits, no matter how much ever strict the law be, manage to find gaps and loopholes for their advantage.

And as far as "what-we-can-do" is considered, awareness is the key. I agree, getting into red light areas and dragging girls out is obviously not possible. But whenever we get a hint of such illegal activities happening around us, informing the police should be the next step. Instead of jumping unprepared and without knowing how deep the water is... it is better have some protection.

Also, when a girl is pulled out of this marshy land.. it is our duty to accept her the way she is. I have seen and heard a lot about females who were left with nothing to do and jobless... and were looked down upon just because they "used" to be sex workers.

This is utter shameful and insensitive on our part. Only when we are positive and calm from inside... that we can bring about a positive change outside.

      don't you agree with me?

  4. Shrishti .. I really like the way you present your views on social issues.
Well This Blog of yours caught my attention.
Prostitution in India will anyways stay, despite the traditional mindset for not legalizing it!!

    <>
Well i think legalizing Prostitution will rather reduce flesh trade, will help monitor the trade and rehabilitate sex workers.
Rules like registration of sex workers (both men and women), licencing of brothels, removal of middle men, regular checks to ensure safety of sex workers, preventing girl/boy child under 18 from entering into this business etc will in fact reduce the social crimes!!
Dont you think legalizing this profession will lead to decrease in HIV or STD disease. Unless and until it is legalized i dont think child trafficking, sexual violence or rape will decrease.
If we see other countries like Brazil, New Zealand, Thailand etc, it has worked miraculously, they have been able to curb STD's, they have been able to reduce sex crimes, They have been able to educate men and women about this hidden but vital issue of society more freely.

I agree that it might lead to gender inequality, but let me tell you there are Gigolos as well who are also a part of our society.

    <>It totally depends on how she's being brought up!! It also depends on every woman and her conscience, if she is educated, if she is determined and strong enough to face life.. i dont think she'll ever chose the path of prostitution;

<> for this i would say that legalizing this profession will give the sex workers an option to seek help from our own govt/for another job/rehabilitation and can always live the rest of life with dignity.

    1. Hey thank you Deepteesh ! Glad i am that you shared your views in such a descriptive way! :)

Well, i wouldn't mind having a healthy debate on this because i have certain facts and points that need mention and should not be ignored!

Firstly, legalizing prostitution will only empower the desperate men out there.
Something that is taking place under the wraps, will start taking place openly! The torture on women will only increase by leaps and bounds.

Secondly, it will NOT decrease HIV/AIDS, rather there will be a rapid increase in the same. we all know the kind of supplies red light areas get. They are not only insufficient, but also of poorest quality. They are nothing but a formality and it, in no way protects both the people involved from STDs.

Thirdly, the middle men and pimps will after legalizing prostitution have the power to supply more number of "willing" + "innocent" girls in to this shameful flesh trade.

And last but not the least, is SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE. Do you really think it is that easy for them to leave the "red" world and make a new beginning? The biggest problem these unfortunate girls face is not that they are dragged into something like this... but that they are not socially accepted even after they are rescued from there. People even then look down upon them.

P.S. will we be happy to see a family member of ours, take this up as a profession in future? What is your answer?

  5. <> Prostitution is illegal in our country…. Has that stopped all the desperate men out there?? You must know that even 5 Star hotels are also being used for this propose... I being form hotel industry have seen these things happening in front of my eyes and no policemen our government officials even dare to enter into their rooms...

Legalizing prostitution will not only make men decent and well behaved but also to some extent less desperate!! (General Human psychology- People generally do what they are not supposed to and vice-versa!!)
By legalizing prostitution we can always decrease drug abuse among the registered sex workers by formulating mandatory regular checkups.

<> don’t you think most of the sexual diseases are being transferred among people due to unawareness?? Shops or companies who manufacture sex toys or sell condoms can set up their business outside the brothels, which will again give an alternative to all the desperate men or women across the country. This will also help bring awareness among the people and encourage them to buy condom/pills like protection more openly and without the fear of being caught!!

<> as I already mentioned in my first comment, licensing of brothels, removal of middle men will help reduce social crimes. Men or women will come willingly to this profession and not forcefully...
If all the sex workers are provided with a registration card or a license, don’t you think we can easily track their background and their family members and check who were “willingly” and who were “innocent”??

Shrishti … legalizing prostitution will give us a lot of options to control it in a better way. Sexual activity is a hidden need of mankind which you will never see in any pyramid of needs and wants...it is a part of our lives and is absolutely natural as well. We cannot blame any man or woman for this natural need of life...
Instead of blaming desperate men or desperate women,
why don’t you blame sex ratio of our country??
    Why don’t you blame illiteracy??
Why don’t you blame social taboos??
Why don’t you blame the orthodox mind set of our culture??
Why don’t you blame the family members who cannot even make their children aware of their own sexuality and dump their girl child in some bin... and finally they end up opting a career like prostitution!!

If you want to stop Prostitution, illegalization is not the solution... Solve the above questions, it will stop automatically. And if you want to stop/reduce sex crimes, rape, drug abuse or inhumanity….Please legalize it…
