The caste-virus.. #1#.

It does not matter which part of India you are from – Caste matters.

I have started preparing a research paper, the topic of which is somewhere related to caste based discrimination at workplace in India. Although my research is in a nascent stage currently and in depth findings can only be disclosed after it is completed… certain facts and findings were so shocking and is nothing less than a slap on our so called “Modern-Society” which “claims” to believe in “equality”, that I couldn’t stop myself from expressing my disappointment!!!

Caste based discrimination is so deep rooted and religiously followed in society and specially at workplace that it is probably not going away any time soon. Whether education, health, religion or workplace… caste based discrimination is omnipresent!

Let’s start from college time. Every college I aspired to get admission in and of course, the one I ultimately got into… every admission form had this Colum that asked me to mention my “Religion” and “Caste”. I felt offended every single time!

When I applied for jobs in companies, this question kept following me. Not that I really faced discrimination anytime… but I have seen people face the same and feel helpless about it. So what if am from the general category? So what if I am SC/ST, from some tribe or a Dalit??

Look at my achievements and accomplishments before you look at my caste and religion!

Gone are the times when dalits were out casted and looked down upon. Times have changed, when will you change?

And if someone gives me the argument that this information of “caste” and “religion” in application forms is used only for statistical purpose and to know what % of population is from which category then let me tell you… this is not the sole purpose! Had this been the case, then the numerous reports of dalits (exclusively) being thrown out of their jobs or SC/STs facing social isolation would not have come out in open.

During my research I read “n” number of cases where public servants at respectable positions said and did things that one would not have expected otherwise.

Let me share one such article here:

“Most elected Dalit women feel they are treated differently from other local government representatives primarily due to being female and Dalit. Overt discriminatory practices are prevalent in local government offices, including prohibitions on Dalit women sitting on chairs alongside other elected representatives; drinking water or tea from vessels used by dominant caste elected representatives. Some Dalit women attempt to actively participate in meetings and taking decisions, but are silenced or ignored; subjected to ‘no confidence’ motions to remove them from office; denied information and support to undertake their duties; etc”

The amount and extent of discrimination faced by dalits makes my heart sink! Rolling out new laws and acts will NOT solve the problem! AWARENESS and COMMEN SENSE will.

Last but not the least, I am firstly an Indian. And humanity is my religion. And if you are a rational recruiter, then this credential should be more than enough for you!

Treat others the way you want to be treated. Let us all take a pledge today, right now, not to discriminate anybody based on their caste or religion. It is humiliating. Imagine yourself to be in their position. Would you even then want to be discriminate??

Feel free to share your views! ;)

  1. Good one shrishti... Being the next generation and young blood of India, I see a lot of people going with the society despite of making some efforts to change the society or at least be the change and i'm worried about that... Enough with conservative country... Think global and not local... thank you.

    1. Thank you Rohit! And wow, "Think global, not local"... that's exactly what is the need of the hour. Rightly said.
This was the smallest sneak peek i could have given in this subject... there's lots more to come! We are living a life half lived... don't you agree?

    2. Yup, but i consider myself out of that 'we'. But talking about society, yes. People are not willing to take a step ahead for various reasons and the so-called respect is also one of the reason. But actually, change doesn't mean disrespect to ancestors who actually made all this nonsense caste stuff. One question i want to ask these kind of people- If your kid met an accident, what will you do? check for the same blood group or check for the person from same caste and then worry about blood group..??

  3. Itw our constitution providing the same, but not stating the limitation of this topic. Indeed caste discrimination has opened up avenue for non deserving people to come up. U rightly stated about discrimination during college admission. People should realise living in a diverse country is it important to consider this petty issue. N we call our self modern india..

    1. Rightly said Varun!
But not everyone is educated and open minded like you and me. And coming to the constitution, let me tell you there are 100s of laws wrt this issue. The minorities act, prevention of atrocities etc etc etc.. these are just a few i could name. But the probem is in our mentality. The society's mentality. Unless and until we don't change or atleast create small pockets of change, things are more or less, going to remain the same! :/

  4. Hey Srishti,

Good to learn that you have continued to research on the topic!!!!

With reference to your very passigrace is that tely written article and as we have discussed earlier, India, today is a classic social oxymoron where there are people like yourself, liberal and well educated but who are very few in number and the other majority, very large in number, educated or otherwise, but still maintaining relentlessly, a collective feudalistic hangover.

The rot is in our upbringing..... All actors in our social system, while we are growing up, bombard us with caste and religion specific stereotype thereby creating prejudices in a systematic and sustained manner. And then the politicians, with their caste and religion based politics, further antagonize us against each other by doling reservations and other populist sops to the underprivileged or the minority. This compels most of us to carry the disgust and ptejudices to our workplace.

Srishti, you have written well, but do you see any end to this soon enough???? I doubt!!! But the only saving grace is that you and I remain optimistic that through our small efforts, we may be able to create small pockets of change.

    Regards,

    Pratish Srivastav

    1. Thank you sir !!! :)
And yes, number of people ready and wanting to accept the change are less. Very less.
I do not see any end to this... at least not in the near future. Even creating pockets of change is a humongous task! But i am persistent and doing my bit by creating awareness and some social work :)

    2. Sure, Srishti, and this change will only happen if people like yourself continue to be persistent!!!! And your current research will finally document some such facts......

    1. Hey Vineeth !!! :) Thanks a lot dear!!!
when it comes to taking advantage of this discrimination... why look at others? We ourselves feel tempted and wish to get through college admissions through the minority quota.. don't we?
I know that's wrong, but that is how it is!
At least we control our temptations, but there are a lot of other people who actually don't think much and get fake minority certificated for themselves...
I am sure even you must have heard about it many times.
P.S. What are you up to these days? as in plans post graduation?

    2. totally agree on that :) i too filled up the minority quota form :P...so nt the right person to comment on the same..lol...fact of the matter is thr must not be such bifurcation or divisions...n abt the fake certificates n think last yr or so many of the govt servents got caught for making such certificates... thts really crazy to see hw people cheat instead fighting for the same ... u see evrywhr reservations for low people n many really talented ones are left out...2 of my frnds one who appeared for UPSC and the other in some banking exmz wr rulled out coz of such reasons. There must definitely be change in this system on bt it will take time...basic thing is everything..the political parties i dnt get it evryday thrs a new party and 100 of them based on different casts that is really pathetic.. if we remove half of them n make a two or three party nation like other countries then only we can manage this...simple evrything revolves around the politicians... the people mstly the poor dnt even knw y are they fighting... given few money and brain washed to strive for someones elses greed. Hope we or our efforts can make the change...u really doing a great job n becoming a fan of your writing :)
